01 — The idea
A work bag in a colour, for once
Bags this size are almost always black, and almost always boxes. This one is neither: the sides fold outwards into wings so the base is wide and the opening narrow, and the whole thing is cut in a deep claret — a red dark enough to carry to work and warm enough not to look like work.
02 — Design
The colour does the work
The finish is a smooth vegan leather with a soft sheen rather than a gloss, and a deep claret shows a shape better than black does: the colour lightens where a wing turns towards the light and deepens where it folds away, so the construction is visible at a glance instead of only up close.
Against it, the only metal is a small gold clasp at the centre of the front panel. Gold on a red with brown in it sits warm rather than bright — silver would have cooled the whole bag down.
The handles are rolled rather than flat, with a 20 cm drop — enough to clear a coat sleeve and sit on the shoulder.

Claret is the one colour a big bag can take.
A dark red has the weight of black without the severity, and on a 43 cm bag that matters — at this size a bright colour dominates a whole outfit. Claret sits against black, navy, grey, camel and denim and still registers as a decision rather than a default.

The wings are the difficult part. Each side is cut, folded and stitched so that it opens and closes the same way every time, and so the bag still sits flat when it is put down. A straight-sided tote is a handful of rectangles; this is a pattern that has to be solved before it can be sewn.
A single deep colour is the other difficulty. Every panel, wing and handle has to come from stock dyed to the same lot, because on a saturated red the smallest difference between two pieces is obvious from across a room.

Is there a shoulder strap?
No. This bag has twin handles only, with a 20 cm drop, which is long enough to sit on the shoulder. No detachable strap is supplied.
Is this real leather?
No. The maker lists vegan leather for the exterior and polyester for the lining. Vegan leather is a synthetic material used in place of animal hide.
Will my laptop or tablet fit?
A 12.9-inch iPad Pro fits, as stated by the maker. A 13-inch laptop is a similar footprint but thicker, so it will go in but will take most of the 13.5 cm depth.
How dark is the claret?
Deep — a burgundy rather than a bright red. Under indoor light it reads almost brown-red and in daylight the red comes forward, which is what lets a bag this size stay wearable.
