01 — The idea
Black is where the shape has to carry it
Take the colour out of a bag and only the outline is left. In black nothing distracts from the folded wings, the two flaps and the line the ties pull — which is either the strongest version of this tote or the one that exposes it, depending on how well it is cut.
02 — Design
One colour, all the way through
Body, handles, pocket flaps, ties and corners are all the same black, in a smooth finish rather than a grained one. On a black bag the pockets and the folded wings stop being pieces and become shadow: you read the bag by its edges, and the construction only shows when the light catches it.
The sides fold outwards into wings that can be drawn in with the ties, so the same bag is narrow when it is light and wide open when it is full.
The gold fittings are two turn locks on the pocket flaps and the small rings on the ties. On black they are the only thing with any brightness at all, which is why there are so few of them.

45 cm across
An iPad mini lies flat with a folder beside it, a bottle stands upright in the 13 cm depth, and the 22 cm handle drop clears a coat sleeve. Inside there is a zipped pocket for the things that should not move around.

04 — Versatility
This is the version that goes to work.
A 45 cm black tote asks nothing of the rest of the outfit and objects to nothing in it. Add two pockets you can reach without stopping and it stops being a bag you carry and becomes the one you leave by the door.

Why this makes sense
Pockets on the outside of a bag are a cost decision. Each one is a flap, a lining, a turn lock and four more seams, and every one of those seams has to sit square on a panel people look straight at. It is the first thing dropped when a tote is made to a price.
A single colour throughout removes the other hiding place. With no contrast trim to break the eye, every panel, flap and fold has to be cut to the same tone and stitched dead square, because nothing on the bag distracts from a line that has gone wrong.

Before you order
Is this real leather?
No. The maker lists vegan leather for the exterior and polyester for the lining — a synthetic material used in place of animal hide. The finish here is smooth rather than grained.
Is there a shoulder strap?
No. This bag has twin handles only, with a 22 cm drop, which is long enough to sit on the shoulder. No detachable strap is supplied.
Do the side ties have to stay done up?
No. Loosen them and the wings open out to the full 13 cm depth; draw them in and the bag narrows to a neater outline. It is the same bag either way.
Will my laptop fit?
The maker states an iPad mini. At 45 cm wide and 22 cm high a 13-inch laptop fits the footprint, but the maker has not confirmed it, so treat that as your own judgement.
