01 — The idea
Decoration is where errors go to hide
Put a pattern, a set of numerals and three sub-dials onto a watch face and almost nobody will notice that the minute hand does not quite reach the track. Take all of it away and that same gap is the only thing there is to look at. Plain dials are not the easy option — they are the unforgiving one.
02 — Design
What is left when you remove everything
Two hands, a set of markers and a dial colour. That is the whole design, which means all three have to be in proportion to each other — hands long enough to reach the markers, markers fine enough not to crowd the centre, and enough empty dial between them to read as deliberate rather than sparse.
The bracelet is kept narrow for the same reason. A wide bracelet under a plain dial makes the watch look like it lost a part.

03 — Build
How to judge a plain watch in a photograph
Look at where the hands sit when they pass each other at twelve. On a well-assembled watch they stack cleanly on the same axis. If one appears off to the side, the hand was pressed on out of true — and on a dial with nothing else on it, you will see that every time you check the time.
Then look at the marker at three and the one at nine. They should be the same distance from the edge.

Before you order
Is a dial without numerals harder to read?
For the first week, marginally. After that you read hand position rather than numbers, which is what you were already doing on a numbered dial.
Which dial colour should I choose?
White for the clearest reading in daylight. Black if you want the watch to sit quietly against the wrist. Champagne if the rest of your jewellery is warm.
Can I wear it in the shower?
It carries a 3 ATM rating, so splashes, rain and washing your hands are not a problem. We do not recommend swimming or hot showers with it on.
