01 — The idea
Round is not a retro choice. It is the original one.
Lenses were ground against a rotating stone, so they came out round, and every pair of spectacles from the thirteenth century to the nineteen twenties was round for that reason alone. Square and rectangular frames are the innovation here, not this one — which is why a round frame never quite looks dated.
02 — Design
What makes it read as period rather than costume
Two details do the work. The rim is thin gold-tone metal, which is how frames were made before plastic existed, and the lens is graduated rather than solid — a nineteen-seventies touch rather than a nineteen-twenties one.
Together they place the frame in a specific era without turning it into fancy dress. The moment a round frame is either too small or too perfectly circular, it stops being a period reference and becomes a prop.

03 — Build
The one thing the originals did badly
Period frames had no lens technology at all. A tinted glass lens in 1930 was exactly that — tinted glass, with no ultraviolet filter and no polarization, which made a dark pair actively worse for the eye than none.
This is the shape with a century of lens development behind it: a polarizing filter that removes reflected glare rather than dimming it, and a full UV400 block on all six colourways.

Will these look like a costume?
Only if the circle is too small. This one is sized close to the eye socket rather than smaller than it, which is the line between a period reference and fancy dress.
Which colour is the most period-correct?
Brown on gold. That is the combination that existed before coloured tints were possible, and it is the one that reads oldest.
How does this differ from your other round frames?
We carry three. This one is the period-styled version with a graduated lens; one is a thin wire frame with adjustable pads; one is a plain round with a straight bridge bar.
