01 — The idea
A beach bag that is still wet inside on the drive home is a badly made beach bag
A lined tote traps everything: damp towel, sand, sun cream, warm air. An open weave does the opposite — water runs straight through it and air moves across whatever is inside, so a towel dries in the bag instead of souring in it. The holes are the point.
02 — Design
Forty centimetres wide, and why that number matters
A folded beach towel is about 35 cm across. Most totes are built to 30 and the towel has to be rolled, which then pushes everything else out to the sides. At 40 cm the towel lies flat along the base and leaves the rest of the bag actually usable.
The handles have a 35 cm drop, which is the shortest length that still clears a shoulder over a summer jacket. Longer and the bag swings at the hip; shorter and it only works in the hand.

03 — Build
The two places a woven bag fails
The handle joins and the base corners — the same two points on every woven bag ever made. Where the handle meets the body the weave carries a concentrated load instead of a spread one, and at the corners the strands are forced around the tightest turn in the whole bag.
Both are reinforced here with a denser weave. It is the part of the construction you cannot see in a photograph and the only part that determines whether the bag survives a second summer.

04 — Versatility
It is not only a beach bag, but it is honest about being one
Unlined and open-woven means people can see what is inside. For a market run, a pool afternoon or carrying a book and a bottle across town, that is irrelevant. For a laptop and documents on a commute, it is the wrong bag and no amount of copywriting changes that.
05 — What it holds
Roughly, in practice
A folded beach towel flat along the base, a book, a bottle, sun cream, sunglasses and a phone — with room left over. Forty by thirty-four centimetres is genuinely large; it is the size at which a tote stops being a handbag and starts being a carry-all.
What it does not do is hold its shape when it is empty. Unlined raffia folds down almost flat, which is useful in a suitcase and a limitation on a shop floor.

Before you order
Will things fall out through the weave?
No — the mesh openings are small enough to hold a phone, a wallet and keys without any risk. Loose coins or a hairclip are a different matter, which is what a small pouch inside is for.
Can it be carried on the shoulder?
Yes. The 35 cm handle drop clears a shoulder comfortably, including over a light jacket.
Does raffia survive getting wet?
It does. Raffia is a natural fibre and handles damp far better than a lined bag, because it dries through. Let it air dry in shape rather than folded, and keep it out of prolonged direct sun so the colour holds.
