01 — The idea
Large bags are usually large in the wrong direction
Most oversized totes gain their volume in height, which means everything falls to the bottom and you excavate to find anything. This one gains it in width and depth — 54 cm across and 20 cm deep — so the contents lie side by side in a single layer instead of stacking. That is the difference between a big bag and a usable one.
02 — Design
A 25 cm handle drop on a 54 cm bag
Twenty-five centimetres is enough to clear a shoulder, which on a bag this wide is not a given — short handles on a wide tote force you to carry it in the hand, and a loaded 54 cm bag in the hand knocks against your leg with every step.
The handles are leather rather than woven, and that is deliberate. Raffia handles on a bag this size stretch under load and the drop grows over a season until the bag drags. Leather does not stretch.
Leather is also used along the top edge, where a woven tote takes the most handling.
03 — Build
Volume is what breaks woven bags
A small woven bag rarely carries more than a kilogram. This one will routinely carry five or six, and every one of those kilos passes through the two points where the handles meet the weave. On a bag this size that is the only part of the construction that really matters.
The handle mounts are set into a leather panel rather than stitched straight onto the raffia, which spreads the load across the whole panel instead of concentrating it on a few strands.

Before you order
Is 54 cm too big?
It is a genuinely large bag — wider than most cabin bags. Measure 54 cm on a table before you order. If you want something that reads as a handbag, this is not it, and that is the point of publishing the number.
Will it stand up on its own?
Loaded, yes. Empty, it folds down almost flat — which is what makes it easy to pack, and means it will not hold a silhouette on a shop floor.
How do I clean woven raffia?
Shake it out, then wipe the leather with a dry soft cloth. Sand falls straight through the weave on its own. Let it dry in shape rather than folded if it gets wet.

A bag this size takes several times as long to weave as a standard tote, so the run is limited by weaving hours rather than by demand. Summer colours are made once.
