01 — The idea
A horizontal bag sits still. A vertical one swings.
Hung on a long chain, a tall bag pivots — it turns as you walk and ends up facing the wrong way. A wide, shallow bag has its weight spread along its length, which keeps it lying flat against the body. That is the practical reason the east-west shape exists, underneath the reason people usually give.
02 — Design
Antique gold, not bright gold
The hardware is finished with a darkened, slightly matt gold tone rather than a polished one. On a small bag the metal occupies a large share of the surface, and a mirror finish turns every piece of it into a highlight that fights the leather for attention.
An antique finish also ages in the right direction. Bright plating shows every scratch as a pale line; a darkened finish absorbs the same wear into its own tone.

03 — Build
Where the chain meets the leather
A 128 cm chain is heavy before anything goes in the bag, and all of that weight hangs from two small anchor points. On a 12 cm tall bag there is very little panel to spread the load into, so those anchors have to be backed — this is the failure most often seen on chain bags, and it is never the chain itself that goes.
The chain is threaded with leather along its length. That is partly appearance and partly function: it stops the metal from catching on knitwear and takes the noise out of it.

04 — Versatility
Three lengths out of one chain
At full length it crosses the body and sits at the hip. Doubled, it becomes a short shoulder strap and the bag rides under the arm. Taken off entirely, the flap and the clasp are all that is left — and at 21 cm it works in the hand as a clutch. One bag, three registers, no extra parts.

Black with gold is the one that goes everywhere and disappears when you want it to. White with gold does the opposite — on a small bag a pale leather reads as deliberate rather than as a neutral, which is exactly why it works in the evening.
06 — The value
Why this makes sense
On a bag this small the hardware is most of the cost. A long threaded chain, a clasp and reinforced anchors add up to more metal than the leather in the body — which is why cheap versions of this shape use a thin chain that kinks, and lose the leather threading first.

08 — Questions
Before you order
Will a phone fit?
Yes, lying flat. At 21 cm wide the bag takes a large-format phone along its length, with room alongside for cards and a lipstick. It is 5–6 cm deep, so it will not take anything bulky.
Can the chain be shortened?
It doubles rather than adjusts. Full length gives a crossbody drop; doubled over, it becomes a short shoulder strap. Those are the two positions, and both are fixed rather than sliding.
Does the chain damage knitwear?
Less than a bare chain would. The leather threaded through the links keeps the metal edges off the fabric, which is the main reason for doing it.
