01 — The idea
A basket that flares is a basket you can actually reach into
The body is narrower at the base than at the opening. That is not a styling choice — it is what stops a deep woven bag closing over itself when it is loaded. A straight-sided basket of the same volume collapses inward at the top the moment there is weight in the bottom, and you end up working through a gap half the size of the opening you paid for.
02 — Design
Ring handles, and why they are not woven
A woven handle on a bag this size stretches. Every kilo pulls the fibres apart a little, and after a season the drop has grown and the basket hangs lower than it was built to. A rigid ring cannot stretch — the 32 cm drop on the day you buy it is the drop three summers later.
The rings also hold the opening apart. Because they are fixed at two points on each side, they pull the top edge outward and keep the mouth of the basket its full width whether it is full or empty.

03 — Build
A woven bag that closes
Almost every straw basket is open at the top, because fitting anything that fastens means adding a firm anchor to a material that moves in every direction. A front hook closure needs a solid mount on both halves, and both have to be set into the weave rather than sewn onto it.
The interior is the same palm weave rather than a fabric lining. Nothing to tear, nothing to hold damp, and sand falls out instead of settling into a seam.

05 — Wearing it

A 32 cm drop clears a shoulder comfortably, which on a 62 cm bag is essential rather than nice to have — a basket this wide carried in the hand swings into your leg with every stride, and loaded it is heavy enough to matter.

Why this makes sense
Weaving a flared basket is harder than weaving a straight one: the number of strands has to increase as the body widens, and it has to happen evenly or the shape goes lopsided. Add rigid handles that must be mounted into the weave rather than sewn on, and a closure that needs a solid anchor on both sides, and almost all of the cost is hours rather than material.

Is 62 cm too large for everyday use?
For most days, yes — this is a travel and beach bag, not a handbag. Measure 62 cm on a table before ordering. The size is the whole point, and it is published so there are no surprises.
Will it hold its shape?
Yes. Unlike a soft raffia tote, a palm-leaf basket is rigid enough to stand on its own empty, and the ring handles hold the opening at full width. It does not fold flat for packing.
How do I clean it?
Shake it out and wipe the leather and canvas with a dry soft cloth. Sand falls through the weave on its own. If it gets wet, let it dry standing upright and out of direct sun.
