01 — The idea
Printed canvas wears out at the corners. Embroidery does not.
A printed pattern sits on top of the cloth as a layer of ink, and the corners and base edges are where it goes first — rubbed pale within a year of being set down on tables and floors. Embroidery is thread stitched through the weave. There is no surface layer to rub away, because the pattern and the fabric are the same thing.
02 — Design
A pattern made of thread
Look closely and the design resolves into stitches — thousands of them, in two tones, worked across the entire panel rather than only where the eye is meant to land. Full-coverage embroidery is significantly slower than embroidering a motif, and it is what gives the cloth its weight and its slight relief.
That relief is why the fabric behaves more like a textile than a canvas. It softens where it is folded and firms where it is stretched, so the tote takes on the shape of what is inside it without creasing into permanent lines.

03 — Build
Unlined, on purpose
A lining on a fabric tote adds weight, adds a second set of seams and gives sand, crumbs and receipts a gap to fall into. Leave it out and the embroidery is visible from the inside as well — which only works if the reverse of the stitching is finished properly, and is the reason most embroidered bags are lined.
The handles have a 16 cm drop: enough to carry in the hand or over the forearm, not enough for the shoulder. On a bag 42 cm wide, longer handles would let it swing into your leg at every step.

04 — Versatility
Eighteen and a half centimetres of depth changes what a tote is
Most large totes are flat panels with a narrow base, so everything stacks and the bag bulges. At 18.5 cm this one has a genuine floor: a laptop lies flat, a folder stands, and a change of clothes goes in beside them rather than on top.

What it does not do is close. The top is open, and on a bag this size that is a real consideration for a commute — worth knowing before rather than after.

Before you order
Can it be worn on the shoulder?
Not comfortably. The drop is 16 cm, which is a hand-and-forearm length. That is deliberate on a 42 cm bag — longer handles would let it swing into your leg as you walk.
Will the embroidery snag?
The stitching is worked tight against the cloth rather than raised in loops, so there is very little for anything to catch on. Keep it away from hook-and-loop fastenings, which pull at any embroidered surface.
How do I clean embroidered canvas?
Brush gently with a dry soft brush, and spot-clean with a barely damp cloth. Never soak it — the threads and the base cloth shrink at different rates, which puckers the panel permanently.
