01 — The idea
A large tote is only as good as what stops it becoming a bin
Everyone knows what happens to a big open bag after two weeks. Sewn-in pockets do not solve it, because they hold the same three things and everything else still pools at the bottom. A compartment that lifts out does: you take the whole interior with you, empty it, or carry it on its own — and the tote goes back to being a clean empty volume rather than an archaeological site.

Quilting is structure, not decoration
Stitching a grid through padded leather does something a plain panel cannot: it makes the surface rigid in every direction at once, without adding a board or a frame. That is why quilted bags hold their shape at sizes where an unquilted one of the same leather would sag.
It also handles wear differently. The raised diamonds take the contact and the stitched lines stay recessed, so a scuff lands on a small raised area instead of across an open panel. On a deep colour, where every mark shows, that matters more than on a pale one.

Can the compartment be carried on its own?
Yes. It is structured enough to stand up and be handled by itself, which is the difference between a removable compartment and a loose pouch.
Will a 15-inch laptop fit?
Yes, flat against the back panel, with the compartment still in place. At 37 cm wide there is room for it and for the rest of a working day.
How do I care for quilted leather?
Wipe with a dry soft cloth, following the quilting lines rather than across them. Avoid conditioner — it collects along the stitched channels and darkens them, which makes the grid more visible rather than less.
