01 — The idea
The saddle shape solves a problem that predates handbags
A bag slung on a body that is moving wants to swing and turn. The original saddle answer was to curve the back panel so it sits into the shape it rests against, and to put the weight low and forward so it cannot rotate. Both of those are here for the same reason — and they are why this silhouette stays still at the hip when a flat rectangle on the same strap would not.
02 — Design
A wide strap is not a style choice
Thirty centimetres of bag loaded onto a thin strap concentrates the whole weight into a narrow band on the shoulder, and on a long crossbody drop that band is doing a lot of work. A wide strap spreads the same load across several times the area — the difference is obvious after twenty minutes, and invisible in a photograph.
It is detachable, so the bag also works on a slim strap when the wide one is more than the outfit wants.

03 — Build
Every panel on a saddle bag is a curve
The front, the flap, the back and the gusset are all shaped pieces — there is not a straight edge anywhere on the outside of the bag. That means the pattern has to be cut precisely and the seams eased around arcs of different radius, and it is why a badly made saddle bag reads as lumpy rather than simply cheap.
The flap closes magnetically rather than with a catch. On a curved top line a mechanical lock would need a flat plate to seat against, and a flat plate on a curve is exactly the wrong thing.

04 — Versatility
Thirty centimetres is the large version of this shape
Saddle bags are usually small, which is why most of them hold a phone and very little else. At 30 by 25 by 10 this one takes a tablet flat, a wallet and everything that goes with a working day — without losing the curve that makes the shape worth having.
05 — Wearing it
Ninety to one hundred and twenty centimetres
At the long end it crosses the body and sits low at the hip, which is where the curved back panel does its work. At ninety it rides higher, closer to the waist, and the bag reads as a shoulder bag instead.
Thirty centimetres of adjustment is a wide range, and it is published as two numbers so you can measure it against something you already wear rather than guessing from a word.
06 — The value
Why this makes sense
Curved panels waste leather. Every shaped piece leaves offcuts that a rectangle would not, and the larger the bag the more of the hide goes unused. On top of that, smooth leather shows every seam — so the curves have to be sewn properly rather than sewn quickly.

Before you order
Will a tablet fit?
Yes, lying flat against the back panel. At 30 cm wide and 10 cm deep there is room for it alongside a wallet and the usual daily things.
Does the wide strap come off?
Yes, at both ends, and it adjusts between 90 and 120 cm. The bag is designed to work on a slimmer strap as well, so the two give it quite different characters.
Does smooth black leather scuff?
It shows a scuff more than a grained finish would, which is the trade for the clean unbroken curves. Wipe with a dry soft cloth and keep it off rough surfaces — the curved base has no feet.

Shaped panels at this size use considerably more hide than a squared bag of the same capacity, because of what has to be left behind on the cutting table. That is what caps each batch.
