01 — The idea
The base decides whether a basket is a basket
Raffia has no rigidity of its own. What makes a woven bag stand rather than flop is the way the bottom is worked: a spiral coiled outward from a single centre point, each round locked into the one before it. That construction is stiff in every direction at once. A base woven as a flat panel and stitched to the sides is faster to make and gives you a bag that folds along its seams by the end of the first season.
02 — Design
Flat webbing, not rolled handles
The handles are wide flat bands rather than rolled cord or woven rope. On a loaded basket that matters: a narrow handle cuts into the hand and rolls in the palm, while a flat band lies against the skin and spreads the same weight over several centimetres.
They are also anchored to leather tabs stitched through the weave rather than woven in. Woven-in handles pull at the strands around them until the basket distorts at the top edge — which is the failure you see on almost every cheap basket bag after one summer.

03 — Build
Look underneath before you buy any basket
On this one the base is a continuous coil worked outward from the centre, with no seam and no join. Every round is locked into its neighbour, so the load spreads across the whole floor instead of into a stitched edge.
It is also why the bag can be unlined. There is no fabric bottom to sag under weight and nothing sewn in to come apart — the structure and the surface are the same thing.

04 — Versatility
Fifteen centimetres deep, and it stays that way
A soft tote loses its depth the moment it is loaded — the sides bow and the floor becomes a point. Because this one is built from a rigid base upward, the fifteen centimetres you measure empty are the fifteen you get full. That is the practical difference between a basket and a bag shaped like one.

A towel flat along the base, a book, a bottle, sun cream, a change of clothes — the standard beach list, with room left. The 25 cm handle drop clears a shoulder, so it can be carried loaded rather than only held.
Unlined and open at the top, which is the honest limitation: everything inside is visible and nothing closes. For a beach or a market that is irrelevant; for a commute it is not.

A coiled base is slow. It is worked round by round from a single starting point, and it cannot be rushed or assembled from parts — which is exactly why the cheaper way of making a basket is to weave a flat sheet and sew it into a box. Before you order
Does it stand up on its own?
Yes, empty and loaded — that is what the coiled base is for. It does not fold flat for packing, which is the trade you make for a basket that keeps its shape.
Can it be carried on the shoulder?
Yes. The 25 cm drop clears a shoulder over a shirt or a light layer, and the flat handles are wide enough not to dig in when the basket is full.
What happens if it gets wet?
Raffia handles damp well — it is a natural fibre and dries through. Let it dry standing upright and away from direct sun, and wipe the leather separately with a dry cloth.
