01 — The idea
A big bag that is only ever big is a bag you use twice a month
Thirty-eight by forty centimetres is genuinely large — excellent when you need it, out of proportion when you do not. The chain pulls at each side solve that without a compromise: released, the full width is there; drawn in, the sides gather and the bag becomes a narrower, shaped tote. Same capacity available, different silhouette on the day.
02 — Design
Lambskin, which is why it can be this size
Nappa lambskin is lighter and more supple than calf. On a bag with a 38 by 40 centimetre face that is not a refinement — it is what makes the thing carryable. The same shopper in structured calf leather would weigh enough empty to matter before anything went in it.
Quilting is what stops that softness becoming shapelessness. A stitched grid gives a large soft panel enough body to hang straight rather than collapsing into folds down its own length.

03 — Build
Where the chains attach is the whole question
A pull that gathers a side panel is putting a concentrated load on soft leather in exactly the place it is least supported. The anchor points have to be backed and set into a reinforced section, or the first real cinch pulls the panel out of line permanently.
Twenty-two centimetre handles are short for a bag this tall. That is deliberate — longer ones on a 40 cm body would let it hang below the hip and swing. These keep it on the shoulder, held close.

Before you order
What do the side chains actually do?
They gather the side panels inward, which narrows the bag and gives it a shaped silhouette. Released, the full 38 cm width is available again. It is a change you make in a second, not a setting you commit to.
Can it go on the shoulder?
Yes — 22 cm handles clear a shoulder over a shirt or light layer. Over a heavy coat it will be tight, which is the trade for keeping a 40 cm bag from hanging too low.
Will it hold its shape empty?
Partly. The quilting gives the panels body so it hangs straight rather than collapsing, but this is a soft bag — it will not stand on a table by itself.
