01 — The idea
Canvas totes always fail in the same two places
The bottom corners, which take every impact when the bag is set down, and the lower sides, which rub against hips, doorframes and car seats. Nowhere else on a canvas tote wears out first — it is always those. Putting leather exactly there, and nowhere it is not needed, is the difference between a bag that lasts and one that looks tired in a year.
02 — Design
Unlined, and why that is the right call here
A lining on a 40 centimetre tote adds weight, a second set of seams and a gap for everything small to fall into. Left unlined, the canvas is finished on both faces and the bag comes in at 0.7 kg — light enough that the size stays useful rather than becoming the reason you leave it at home.
It also means the construction is visible from the inside. Every seam, every reinforcement and every stitch line is on show, which only works if all of them are right.

03 — Build
Twenty-one and a half centimetres of handle
Short, for a bag this size. Long enough to clear a shoulder over a shirt, not long enough to let a 40 cm tote hang below the hip where it swings into your leg with every stride. On a large bag the handle length decides whether the size is usable or merely impressive.
The handles are stitched in a thread matched to the leather rather than contrasting. On a bag whose whole argument is that the reinforcement is functional, a contrast stitch would turn it into decoration.

04 — Versatility
Fourteen centimetres of depth on a 40 cm face
That is a working volume rather than a flat shopper. A laptop, documents, a bottle and a jumper go in side by side instead of stacking, and the bag keeps its shape around them because the reinforced base gives it a floor to sit on.
05 — What it holds
A full day, and then some
A laptop flat against the back, documents beside it, a water bottle standing upright, a wallet and everything else. Forty by thirty-two by fourteen is the volume at which a tote replaces the second bag people usually end up carrying.
The honest limitation is that it is unlined and open at the top under a single snap. Nothing is compartmentalised, and small loose things go to the bottom — a pouch inside solves it, the bag itself does not.
06 — The value
Why this makes sense
An unlined bag has nowhere to hide. Every seam and every reinforcement is visible from the inside, which means the construction has to be finished to the same standard on both faces — roughly twice the work of a lined bag, where the interior only has to be covered.

Before you order
Is unlined a downgrade?
Not on a canvas tote. It removes weight and a second set of seams, and it means the inside is finished properly rather than hidden. On a leather bag a lining does real work; here it mostly adds mass.
Can it be worn on the shoulder?
Yes, over a shirt or a light layer — 21.5 cm clears a shoulder. Over a heavy coat it will be tight, which is the trade for keeping a 40 cm bag from hanging too low.
How do I clean it?
Brush the canvas dry, spot-clean with a barely damp cloth, and wipe the leather separately. Do not soak it — canvas and leather dry at different rates and that is what leaves a tide line at the join.

The patterned canvas is produced as a run of cloth, and a 40 cm panel takes a great deal of it. When the run ends the loom is not re-set for a small reorder.
