01 — The idea
A handle stitched to a bag is a joint, and joints fail
On almost every tote the handles are separate straps attached at four points, and those four points carry everything the bag ever holds. Here the handles rise out of the body panel itself — the same piece of leather, cut in one continuous outline, with no seam anywhere along the load path. There is nothing to come away because there is nothing attached.
02 — Design
Cutting handles out of the body is expensive
A separate strap can be cut from an offcut — a narrow strip from anywhere on the hide, including the parts nothing else can use. A handle that is part of the body panel has to come from the same continuous section, which means the piece being cut is far larger and the grain has to run evenly from the base of the bag all the way up over the shoulder.
That is the whole trade. More hide used, more waste around the cut, and a silhouette with one unbroken line from the bottom of the bag to the top of the handle.

03 — Build
Suede inside, and one kilo on the scale
The lining is suede in the same tone as the outside. On an open tote the interior is visible every time you look down into it, which is why it is worth lining properly — and suede has the additional advantage of gripping what is inside slightly, so things move around less in a bag with no compartments.
One kilogram empty is honest for a bag 50 cm across in grained calf. It is not light, and no bag at this size in this leather is. What it is, is under the weight at which a full tote stops being carried.

04 — Versatility
Two bags, and the straps decide which
Drawn in at 37 centimetres it is a shaped shoulder bag that holds its outline against the body. Let out to 50 it becomes a full working tote that takes a laptop flat with room beside it. Most bags that claim to do both are one size pretending; this one changes by a third of its own width.
05 — What it holds
A laptop, and everything around it
At full width a laptop lies flat against the back panel with a tablet, a large wallet and cosmetics beside it rather than stacked on top. Fourteen to eighteen centimetres of depth is a working volume — the bag carries a day, not an evening.
The honest limitation is that it is open at the top, unstructured, and has one main compartment with a single zip pocket. Small loose things reach the bottom; the zip pocket is the answer for what you actually want to find.
06 — The value
Why this makes sense
The single-piece handle is the reason this bag costs what it does, and it is invisible in a photograph — a stitched strap and a cut one look identical until you turn the bag over. The suede lining is the second decision of the same kind: nobody sees it in a listing and everybody sees it every day they use the bag.

Before you order
How do the side straps work?
They draw the side panels inward from inside the bag. Fastened, the width comes in to about 37 cm and the shape narrows; released, it opens to about 50 cm. It takes a few seconds and can be changed as often as you like.
Will it hold its shape?
No — it is unstructured by design and settles around what is inside, which is what lets the width change at all. If you want a tote that stands square on a table, a structured one is the right choice instead.
Will the handles go over a coat?
Yes. Around 28 cm of handle height clears a shoulder over a winter layer, which is unusually generous and is the reason the handles look as long as they do.

A body and its handles cut as a single piece needs a section of hide almost fifty centimetres across with even grain throughout. Few skins give two, and none gives many.
