The body is not cut from woven sheet and sewn together. It is a single rope of raffia wound in a spiral from the centre of the base and stitched round by round until the shape exists. There is no side seam because there is nothing to join.

01 — The idea
A straw bag is usually a shape pretending to be a craft
Most are machine-woven flat, cut to a pattern and stitched at the corners, which is why the weave runs into a seam and stops. Coiling is the older method and the slower one: the rope is wound and sewn as it goes, so the direction of the weave follows the form of the bag. Look at the base and you can see where it started.
02 — Design
The scalloped edge is structural
The wave along the top is not a trim laid on afterwards — it is where the coil stops, and each peak is a round that was carried a little further than the one below it. That is why the curve is soft rather than cut: a scissored edge on raffia frays, a finished coil does not.
The same logic shapes the body. The bag flares from a narrow oval base to a wide mouth because each successive round was drawn slightly wider, which is a decision made while making rather than on a pattern.
Leather handles run the full height of the front and back rather than stopping at the rim, so the weight pulls on the whole panel instead of on two points at the edge.
03 — Build
Unlined, with a pouch instead
There is no fabric lining. A lining on a coiled basket hides the very thing you paid for, and it adds weight to a bag whose entire appeal is that it has almost none. What you get instead is the inside of the weave, which is as finished as the outside.
The trade-off is real and we will name it: nothing is separated and nothing is hidden. That is what the leather zip pouch is for — it takes the wallet, the cards and the keys, and it lifts straight out when you want the basket empty.

04 — Versatility
Shoulder length, not hand length
At around 35 cm the handles clear a shoulder comfortably, which on a 42 cm basket is the difference between carrying it and hauling it. It takes a towel and a book as easily as a market run, and because the whole thing weighs almost nothing empty, what is in it is what you feel.
05 — The material
Natural raffia does not arrive uniform
The colour runs from pale straw to a deeper wheat within the same bag, and no two are identical, because the fibre is a leaf rather than a dyed yarn. Small irregularities in the coil are the signature of the method, not faults in it — a perfectly even basket is a machine-made one.

Why this makes sense
Coiling is measured in hours per bag, not minutes. Every round is stitched to the one beneath it by hand along its entire length, and the flare and the scalloped rim are both controlled by how far each round is carried — there is no mould and no pattern piece to make it come out right.

Before you order
Does it stay open at the top?
Yes — there is no closure, which is what a basket is. The pouch is where anything worth protecting should live, and it zips. On a beach or at a market that arrangement is the right one; on a packed train it is not.
Will it keep its shape?
The coil is stiff enough to stand on its own and soft enough to give against a hip rather than dig in. Store it upright and unfilled; raffia holds a crease if it is squashed flat for months.
What if it gets wet?
Let it dry naturally, away from direct heat, standing up so the base does not flatten. Raffia takes water far better than it takes a radiator. The leather handles want a wipe and then the same patience.
