01 — The idea
A spare strap is usually the same strap in another colour
Here one is a woven band and the other is a thin flat leather strip, and they put the bag in two different registers. The webbing is wide, casual and comfortable under weight; the leather is narrow, formal and almost invisible against clothing. Same bag, and the decision is made at the door rather than at the checkout.
02 — Design
A zip that goes over the top of a curve
The top of this bag is domed in two directions at once, and the zip runs right over it. Zip tape is made flat, so easing it around a compound curve without a single pucker anywhere along its length is one of the harder things to do in bag making — and it cannot be fixed afterwards.
It is the reason most dome bags close with a flap instead, and the first thing worth looking at on any bag shaped like this one.

03 — Build
Look at the base before anything else
A dome bag with short handles lives on surfaces. It is set down on desks, café tables, train floors and the passenger seat several times a day, and on a leather bag the base is the first place that shows it.
Metal studs at the corners lift the leather clear of whatever it is standing on. It is the least glamorous component here and it does more for how the bag looks in year three than the leather grade does.

04 — Versatility
Handles, webbing, or leather
The two short handles hold it in the hand, which is how a dome is meant to be carried and where the shape reads best. The webbing strap takes it across the body for a day with weight in it. The leather strap does the same job in a register that suits an evening. Nothing has to be unscrewed to change between them.
05 — What fits
Depth is what a dome is for
A curved top means the bag is at its widest through the middle rather than at the opening, so things sit in a volume rather than stacking flat. A phone, a wallet, keys, a compact and sunglasses go in without the shape changing.
What it will not take is anything large and flat. The zip opening follows the curve, so the widest part of the bag is below the point where you put things in — a tablet reaches the narrow part and stops.

Before you order
Are both straps really included?
Yes — the woven one and the flat leather one, both with their own clasps, both in the box. Neither is an optional extra.
Are the measurements exact?
They are given as approximate and rounded, because a domed body is measured across a curve rather than a flat panel. Expect a small variation rather than a large one.
How do I look after grained leather?
A dry soft cloth, and out of prolonged direct sun. The grain does most of the work on its own — it breaks up light, so the everyday marks that would show on a smooth hide disappear into the texture.

A dome takes more panels than a box
Curved sides are cut on shaped patterns that cannot be nested tightly on a hide, so more of each skin is left as offcut. Two straps per bag then take material of their own before a single one is sold.
