01 — The idea
Lining a woven bag undoes the reason it is woven
Most raffia totes have a fabric lining sewn in, and it solves one problem while creating three: the bag stops breathing, it gains weight, and sand and grit now collect in a bottom seam instead of falling out. Left unlined, an open weave does what it was made to do. Everything shakes out, air moves through it, and a bag 37.5 centimetres across weighs almost nothing empty.
02 — Design
Leather only where the weave cannot cope
Raffia is strong across a panel and weak at a point. Hang a loaded bag off two woven loops and the weave pulls apart around them within a season — so the handles, the mounts and the trim at the top edge are leather, and everything else is left as weave.
The handle mounts are the part worth looking at: leather tabs set through the weave and closed with studs, so the load spreads into a patch of the panel rather than pulling on individual strands.

03 — Build
Handwoven means it is not identical
A machine-made weave repeats exactly. This one does not — the strand spacing varies slightly across a panel and no two bags have the same pattern of small irregularities. That is what handwoven looks like, and a perfectly uniform raffia surface is the sign of the opposite.
It also means the colour is the fibre's own. Raffia is a natural material and the tone shifts a little between batches, which is worth expecting rather than being surprised by.

04 — Versatility
Seventeen centimetres deep is not a beach bag number
It is a working one. A laptop goes in flat, a folder beside it, a towel rolled on top — the same volume that makes it good for a Saturday makes it usable on a Tuesday. A raffia tote that only works between June and August is a raffia tote cut too small.
05 — Living with an open weave
What it is good at, and what it is not
Good at: weight, air and emptying. There is no lining to hold sand, no fabric to stay damp, and at 37.5 by 30 centimetres it is one of the lightest bags of its size you will carry. Shake it out and it is clean.
Not good at: privacy or security. An open weave is exactly that — what is inside is partly visible, and small things can work toward the gaps. Use a pouch for anything you would not leave on a table, and the bag does everything else.
06 — The value
Why this makes sense
Handweaving a panel 37.5 centimetres across is hours of work that cannot be shortened, and the leather mounts have to be set through a material that will not take a stitch line the way a hide does. Leaving it unlined is the harder choice too — there is no fabric covering the inside face of the weave, so the work has to be as clean from the inside as from the outside.

Before you order
Can people see what is inside?
Partly — it is an open weave and that is the trade for the lightness. A pouch inside solves it for anything you would rather keep private, and still leaves the bag nearly empty.
Will the weave stretch under weight?
Not at the handles, which is where it would matter — those hang from leather tabs studded through the panel rather than from the weave itself. The body will relax slightly with use, which is normal for a natural fibre.
How do I clean raffia?
Shake it out and brush it dry. Do not soak it — raffia is a plant fibre and it stiffens and discolours as it dries. Wipe the leather parts separately with a dry cloth.

Every panel is woven individually and there is no way to make that faster. The run is set by how many can be finished rather than by how many were wanted, and the raffia tone shifts between harvests.
