01 — The idea
Large bags usually get large in the wrong direction
Add depth and a tote becomes a box that hangs off you, knocks against door frames and makes everything inside it unreachable at the bottom. Add height instead and it stays flat against the body while holding just as much. Forty-three centimetres tall on five to eight of depth is the version of "big" that you can actually walk through a city with.
02 — Design
Eighteen centimetres of width, decided by a chain
Inside each side panel there is a chain. Drawn up, it gathers the sides inward and the bag narrows to about 37 centimetres with the top pulling into a softer, shaped outline. Released, the full 55 opens out and the tote goes back to its whole capacity.
Putting the mechanism inside rather than outside is what keeps it invisible. From the front there is no strap, no buckle and no stud — only a bag that is a different width than it was yesterday.

03 — Build
Embroidered, not simply woven
The raffia here is worked by hand across the panel rather than plaited into a flat sheet, which is why the surface has an open, slightly irregular structure instead of a repeating grid. On a panel 43 centimetres tall that is a great many hours, and it is the difference you can see at arm's length.
It is left unlined, which on a bag this large is the only reason it weighs what it does — a full lining across a face this size would add more than the raffia itself.

04 — Versatility
Twenty-two centimetres of handle, over a coat
On a bag this tall the handle height decides everything. Twenty-two centimetres clears a shoulder over a jacket and keeps the base at hip level rather than at the knee — which is where a 43 cm bag ends up if the handles are drawn any longer.
05 — Colourways and what fits
Three tones, and a laptop upright
Natural beige is the raffia's own colour. Light beige is the paler version of the same fibre, and black is the one that reads as a city bag rather than a summer one — the same weave, dyed through, and the only version of this shape that works in October.
At 43 centimetres tall a laptop, a folder and a book all stand upright rather than lying across the opening. The removable raffia pouch takes the small things that would otherwise find the gaps in an open weave, which on a bag this size is not optional.
06 — The value
Why this makes sense
Hand embroidery across a panel this large is the single biggest cost in the bag and the one that cannot be shortened. The internal chains are the second: two mechanisms built into the side seams, invisible from outside, that have to hold their shape without pulling the weave out of line.

Before you order
How do the internal chains work?
They run inside each side panel. Drawn up they gather the sides and narrow the bag to about 37 cm; released, it opens back to 55. It takes a few seconds and nothing shows on the outside either way.
Is five centimetres of depth enough?
For flat things, yes — and that is what the height is for. A laptop, a folder, a book and a tablet all stand upright. Anything bulky is the wrong shape for this bag, and 8 cm at the widest is the honest ceiling.
How do I clean raffia?
Shake it out and brush it dry. Do not soak it — raffia is a plant fibre and it stiffens and discolours as it dries, and on a dyed black version water marks show more than on the natural.
